I would like to thank all stakeholders for responding to the invitation and coming in person at such high level. This shows how high on the agenda disability issues are for the involved agencies and institutions.

Ik wil graag alle belanghebbenden danken voor het aanvaarden van de uitnodiging en om zelf te komen. Dit laat zien dat handicap gerelateerde zaken hoog op de agenda staan voor de betrokken agentschappen en instellingen.

I would of course like to thank all the MEPs. I have been positively surprised by the many Committees giving opinions, which again shows the high level of interest in disability within the EP. It also shows that disability is a cross-cutting issue which cannot only be reduced to the employment and social affairs Committee, although it plays an important and prominent role.

Ik wil uiteraard ook de Europarlementsleden danken. Ik ben ook aangenaam verrast over het feit dat zoveel Commissies bereid zijn om een Opinie te geven. Dit illustreert opnieuw dat er veel belangstelling is voor “handicap” binnen het Europees Parlement. Dit laat ook zien dat handicap een breed thema is dat niet gereduceerd kan worden tot de Commissie Werk en Sociale Zaken hoewel deze Commissie uiteraard een belangrijke rol speelt.

During the consultation procedure, in the spirit of the Convention I have closely consulted with and tried to actively involve persons with disabilities and their representative organisations at all stages to arrive at a holistic report and working document.

Tijdens de consultatieprocedure heb ik in de geest van het Verdrag nauw overlegd met personen met een beperking en hun verenigingen en heb ik geprobeerd hen er actief bij te betrekken tijdens alle stadia om te komen tot een allesomvattend verslag en werkdocument.

Several public hearings and Disability Intergroup meetings were organised in the process all in close co-operation especially with the European Disability Forum, as well as its members.

Ook werden enkele publieke hoorzittingen en Disability Intergroup vergaderingen georganiseerd in nauwe samenwerking vooral met het Europees GehandicaptenForum en diens leden.

Possibly most importantly the EMPL Committee meeting today is one of the most accessible Committee meetings in the EP so far. I would like to thank the EMPL secretariat for their hard work

Mogelijk het belangrijkst is dat de EMPL commissievergadering vandaag een van de meest toegankelijke commissievergaderingen is in het Europees Parlement. Ik wil graag het EMPL secretariaat danken voor hun harde werk.

With regard to the key points for the report/working document:

Wat betreft de sleutelpunten voor het verslag/werkdocument:

While there are many important points in the report, I would like to highlight the EU institutions’ own compliance with the CRPD in general and the Concluding Observations more specifically.

Hoewel er veel belangrijke punten zijn in het verslag, wil ik graag inzoomen op de naleving door de EU instellingen van het VN Verdrag in het algemeen en de Slotopmerkingen in het bijzonder.

We need to be a positive example to Member States and ensure all citizens, staff, and indeed also MEPs can fully access and participate in all political processes, events and debates here at the EP.

We moeten zelf een goed voorbeeld zijn voor de Lidstaten en dus ervoor zorgen dat alle burgers, staf en inderdaad ook alle Europarlementsleden volledige toegang hebben tot en kunnen deelnemen aan alle politieke processen, evenementen en debatten hier in het Europees Parlement.

This includes the provision of CRPD-compliant reasonable accommodation and accessibility standards for public events and meetings held on EP premises, such as the current Committee meeting.

Dat houdt in dat we redelijke aanpassingen en toegankelijkheidsstandaarden moeten voorzien, overeenkomstig het VN Verdrag, voor publieke evenementen en vergaderingen die doorgaan in de gebouwen van het Europees Parlement, zoals de huidige commissievergadering.

To conclude, I look forward to further working with the shadow rapporteurs and the other Committees, as well as disability organisations.

Tot besluit kijk ik uit naar verdere samenwerking met de schaduwverslaggevers en de andere Commissies en ook met de organisaties van personen met een handicap.
